Grants
DESCRIPTION:
In 2008-2009, First 5 Contra Costa will allocate a total of
$450,204 to fund the following:
1. FAMILY-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY GRANTS
Grants up to $5,000 are awarded to community groups and nonprofit organizations to conduct health and safety projects, parent education classes, or community festivals and up to $10,000 to build safer playgrounds.
2. READY, SET, READ (RSR) COMMUNITY GRANTS
$500 grants awarded to licensed child care programs to purchase
books at First 5’s annual Ready, Set, Read Child Care
Literacy Fair.
3. ENRICHMENT GRANTS
Free enrichment classes – arts, dance, and sports – for children five and younger and their parents are provided throughout the county.

RESULTS:
- Since 2001, First 5 Contra Costa has awarded nearly 200 Family-Friendly Community Grants, totaling $1.1 million.
- Since 2002, First 5 Contra Costa has awarded 152 Ready, Set, Read Community Grants, totaling $416,000.
- Nearly 900 child care providers (centers & family child care) have participated in the Ready, Set, Read Fair.
- Enrichment classes have attracted 700 families since 2004.
