Family Emergency Shelter

DESCRIPTION:

Because homeless children are at great risk for poor development, First 5 Contra Costa has partnered with the community to support an emergency family homeless shelter. The program provides comprehensive services to homeless families, including shelter, daily meals and basic items, case management, and assistance locating employment and permanent housing. Parents with young children receive parent education on child development and preschool enrollment.

About the Special Reserve Fund:

First 5 Contra Costa established a Special Reserve Fund in 2003 when it set aside $6 million to respond to the impact on First 5 Strategies from state and local budget reductions. The Special Reserve Fund was established for three years only through 2007-2008. The Commission recently approved allocating an additional $1,005,000 over a three-year period for services for homeless families with young children. This funding is the remainder of the Special Reserve Fund.
