Tips for Reading to Children
Long before your child starts school, you can help him or her develop the skills that are needed for reading and writing.

Activities you can do to help your child get ready to read:

  • Read aloud together every day.
  • Talk about the story and the pictures as you read.
  • Ask your child to guess what happens next.
  • Let your child see you reading.
  • Read the same book over and over – it builds your child’s vocabulary.
  • Get a library card and visit the library often.
  • Ask your child to draw a picture and tell you what it is about.
  • Talk about the colors and sounds in and around your home.
