Preschool Makes a Difference: Quality Improvement
Description
In addition to increasing preschool access, Preschool Makes a Difference is also designed to increase the quality of child care in areas of the county where there is a lack of quality child care, which typically are the same communities with low-performing elementary schools. PMD quality improvement efforts provide support, grants, and technical assistance to:
- Sites already approved to participate in PMD. Participating PMD preschools receive significant resources and support to further hone staff skills, improve administrative practices, and help staff to grow within a professional learning community.
- Sites seeking to raise quality to meet PMD standards in order to become "PMD ready". Participants receive training, coaching, technical assistance, and mini-grants for materials and renovations to increase environmental quality, health and safety standards, and other requirements expected for a PMD site. Participants are also required to work toward earning an associate's degree in early childhood education and participate in professional development trainings.
Results
- 66 child care programs have met quality requirements to be accepted into the PMD program.
- 20 sites are participating in the "PMD ready" program.
