Home Visiting

Description

First 5 Contra Costa funds home visiting programs for at-risk expectant parents, first-time parents, and medically vulnerable infants. Families receive one-on-support on topics such as child development, breastfeeding and nutrition, child safety, immunizations, health insurance, and referrals to needed services. Programs also offer parents social support through group activities.

Results

  • 10,000 children and parents living in Contra Costa’s highest risk communities have received in-home health and parenting education services that increased parent-child bonding and ensured most children were up-to-date on immunizations and had health insurance.
  • Last year, home visitors served 1,400 families, averaging 6.5 visits per family. More than 8,700 visits were provided.
  • The majority of families receiving home visiting services last year reported improvements in parenting skills. Most families surveyed stated their home visitor helped them to better understand their child.
  • Most parents reported that their family income was less than $15,000, with another third reporting income between $15,000 and $30,000.
