Special Needs

Description

First 5 Contra Costa funds the following programs to:

  • Provide parents of children with special needs with peer support and training to help them care for their child.
  • Help children with special needs to thrive in licensed child care settings by providing Inclusion Facilitators to work one-on-one with children, providers, and parents.
  • Assist parents with disabilities through a support group, home visits, and by providing modified baby care equipment, such as a device that helps deaf parents know when their baby is crying.

Results

  • Over 300 families of children with special needs received one-on-one and group support, mentoring, and assistance navigating the disability service system. As a result, parents improved their ability to care for their child.
  • 122 children and 66 child care providers received assistance through the Inclusion Program. Most providers stated that the program helped a child to remain in their care or find a more appropriate child care setting.
  • Last year 13 parents with disabilities participated in a support group. Some high-need parents received home visits and adaptive equipment.
