What do Regional Groups do?
Regional Groups receive $10,000 to plan and conduct community projects that make Contra Costa County safer and more family-friendly, such as free events for children and families, leadership trainings, and advocating with elected officials. Thousands of parents have participated in these activities over the past three years, from West County’s Super Saturday Family Fest in October to Week of the Young Child activities held in East County every April. Group members also provide outreach and education about First 5 Contra Costa activities.
What is the purpose of the Regional Groups?
The Regional Groups provide a direct link between the community and First 5 Contra Costa. They are an opportunity for community members to be empowered and decide how to best strengthen the lives of children and families in their neighborhoods, in their region of the county and countywide. They also are a great opportunity to get to know other concerned volunteers in your community.
How does First 5 Contra Costa support the work of the Regional Groups?
We provide staff support, child-care, translation services, and dinner at every meeting. Each Regional Group can receive up to $10,000 each year to conduct projects. We will also provide training on meeting facilitation, leadership/advocacy and other topics groups decide.
Do I have to be a parent of a young child to join a Regional Group?
No. All Contra Costa residents who care about children are welcome to participate.
What is the time commitment?
The Groups meet on a monthly basis and sometime more often when they are working on upcoming projects.
What can I do?
New participants can help to organize events, voice their concerns to city and county officials on behalf of children, help organize monthly meetings, provide input on future projects, be an advocate for young children in Contra Costa County, and much more!
How did the Groups get started?
The Groups originated from First 5 Contra Costa’s involvement in a four-year pilot project sponsored by six foundations to create ongoing, meaningful opportunities to engage community members in Proposition 10 work, particularly community members who do not usually get involved.
How else can I get involved with First 5 Contra Costa?
