The School Readiness Initiative helps prepare children to enter kindergarten ready to learn.

First 5 Contra Costa’s School Readiness Initiative has created new preschool, parent education, and outreach programs in 35 communities with low-performing elementary schools to help children enter school healthy and learning.


Programs take place in the West Contra Costa, Mt. Diablo, Antioch, and Pittsburg School Districts.

Parents, teachers, child care providers, community agencies, and principals helped to develop local school readiness plans and are actively participating on school readiness teams to implement programs. All school readiness programs address Contra Costa’s cultural and linguistic diversity, including children with disabilities or other special needs.
