School Readiness Programs in Bay Point & Concord

  • Ygnacio Valley

Amount allocated by State: $830,000 over 4 years.

The following programs are taking place in the Mt. Diablo School District:

  • A dual preschool-English tutoring program for children and parents – children attend preschool while their parents learn English in the next room.
  • Literacy workshops that help educate parents how to be their child’s first teacher. The award-winning Raising a Reader program, which promotes early literacy and parent-child bonding through their lap-reading and book-lending program will start next month.
  • A new cooperative preschool program taught by a kindergarten teacher with help from parents volunteering in the classroom.
  • Outreach workers who link parents and caregivers with schools as well as provide information about school readiness and kindergarten transition activities available locally.
  • Free kits containing crayons, shapes and colors cards, safety scissors, alphabet and number games, and other high-quality learning materials distributed to parents at kindergarten registration.
  • Each school has a “school readiness team” made up of principals, kindergarten teachers, parents, and early care providers to implement local school readiness programs.
