A Difference

A Profile of Child Care Needs in Contra Costa County: 2006 to 2015.

Did you know that:

  • Most cities in the County have current shortages of child care spaces and several cities have shortages that exceed 1,000 child care spaces?
  • The demand for preschool age spaces for 3 to 5 year olds exceeds existing supply of preschool spaces currently in all but 6 cities in the County?
  • Given the size of the County and the diversity of incomes and ethnicity, providing adequate child care services for children will present considerable challenges?

All this and much more can be found in the new data study report, A Profile of Child Care Needs in Contra Costa County: 2006 to 2015.

First 5 Contra Costa Children and Families Commission, the Contra Costa County Office of Education/Local Planning Council, the Contra Costa Child Care Council, and the Employment and Human Services Department have been working collaboratively for the past two years to create a plan for universal preschool in Contra Costa County, called Preschool Makes a Difference (PMD). In order to create an effective plan, data was needed to help identify current and projected demographics as well as child care supply and demand. In addition, the Local Planning Council for Child Care and Development (through the County Office of Education) needed data collected for the development of their child care needs assessment update and strategic plan, required by the California Department of Education.

This extensive study has been completed and is available here for your review or you can also find it on the Contra Costa County Office of Education's website by following this link.

All data contained in this report is based on currently published data from various public and non-profit agencies, with an analysis of the current status of children for 2006 with projections to 2010 and 2015, by age of children and location. Additional analysis of the data and estimates of child care demand were prepared by the study’s prime consultant, Brion & Associates with support from Nilsson Consulting and LINCC Consulting Group. The Institute of Geographic Information Science (IGIS) of San Francisco State University prepared the GIS maps for this effort.

The table has a list of the data categories contained in the report and the corresponding PDF files. As you will see, there is a report summary and significant findings, 18 GIS maps of countywide and citywide data, child care supply and demand data by age and city for 2006, 2010, and 2015; demographic data on children and families; information on special populations, the child care workforce, kindergarten readiness and school data; and much more.

The data is intended to be used by and is of benefit to all communities in Contra Costa County. As Contra Costa cities and the county move forward in planning, we felt that this data would be extremely valuable to help you develop the most effective early care and education programs, policies, and funding strategies. We hope you find this useful.
